This session brings together business leaders who are leading with purpose to drive a competitive values-led business strategy while also implementing environmental, social, and governance practices across their business to drive resilience and growth.
Through a series of short presentations, speakers will share how their organizations are leveraging social purpose and ESG, which are different but complementary strategies to strengthen operations, navigate uncertainty, and create lasting impact. From rethinking business models to unlocking new opportunities, this event will explore how purpose-driven strategies can support both immediate performance and long-term success.
Following the presentations, we will open it up to the audience for questions, and then move into a more relaxed mixer to continue the conversation.

Chair & Cofounder, Canadian Purpose Economy Project
Chris has over two decades of experience in broadcasting and brings a natural ability to connect, communicate, and engage audiences. For nearly four years at Shift Energy Group, he has focused on making solar more accessible by educating and engaging people both online and in person. As Community Manager, Chris is passionate about helping homeowners and businesses understand the real-world benefits of solar and clean energy. Known for his positive, honest, and hardworking approach, he thrives on building genuine relationships and empowering others to make confident, informed decisions about their energy future.
Karen Alko
Director, Community Relations, ABC Recycling
Karen is the Director, Community Relations of ABC Recycling, Western Canada’s largest scrap metal recycling company. Founded in 1912, ABC is a fourth-generation family business with eleven locations throughout BC, Alberta and Washington State. Karen directs all philanthropic activities, leads ABC’s Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan, and directs and supports the family enterprise development activities. Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Concordia University. She is a Board Member of Ben Gurion University Canada, Metro Vancouver, as well as a past Board Members of Family Enterprise Canada (FEC), and Vancouver Talmud Torah School. In 2025 she was a Transformational Women in Family Business Award recipient, and in 2018, she was named a Top Family Business Leader to Wach (both awarded by Family Business Magazine).
Richard Kouwenhoven

Richard has been proud to serve as Hemlock’s President since 2012 and CEO since 2021. Obtaining his Bachelor of Technology Degree from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Graphic Communication Management program in 1996, Richard has over 30 years of hands-on print industry experience and has applied a passion for environmental sustainability to the Hemlock business throughout his career.
